The Classical Grammy Nominees for 2011

The Grammy Award nominees were revealed tonight – music's answer to the Oscars and the Tony Awards – during a concert telecast on CBS.

Not that I have anything against LL Cool J (he's great on NCIS: Los Angeles) but there isn't enough Benadryl in the house for me to sit through even two minutes of Justin Bieber, so I'm just scouring the web-site waiting for the list of nominees to be posted because, like, I rather doubt Hilary Hahn's going to be playing the 3rd Movement of Jennifer Higdon's Violin Concerto on the TV show (wouldn't that be great!).

Anyway, the winners will be announced on February 13th, 2011, at 8pm – about 73 days from now, if you're counting down.

(UPDATE: for the Winners, follow this link.)

Here are the nominees in the Classical Division: congratulations to everyone whose recording was nominated!

While I'm happy for those that were nominated, I am especially bummed to see Jennifer Higdon's Violin Concerto with Hilary Hahn absent from this list. Oh well... It's a great work and a very fine recording -- it's a winner in my book... for what that's worth...

Anyway, there they are -- tune in Feb 13th, 2011, to find out who the Grammy Winners are!

  1. Dick, I'm sure you remembered this by now, but just in case: Jennifer Higdon won a Grammy last year for that piece. She took home the Grammy for Best Contemporary Composition.

    Cheers,

  2. Hi, Fred - actually, the recording of the Violin Concerto came out in September of 2010 and wasn't eligible for the Grammy Awards last year. On January 31st, 2010, she took home the Grammy for Best Contemporary Composition for her *Percussion* Concerto, not the Violin Concerto.

I would agree with you, Dick, if the Higdon violin concerto were the only one on the recording. Unfortunately, Hilary Hahn also included her rendition of the Tchaikovsky, which (to my ears, and probably to many others' as well) is extremely clean, polished, note-perfect--and almost completely soulless.

  4. I'm not fond of her performance of the Tchaikovsky, either, but on the other hand it has no bearing what else is on the disc - Hilary Hahn could be nominated for her performance of just the Higdon and Jennifer Higdon could be nominated for Best Contemporary Composition without any input about the concerto Tchaikovsky composed. And I can't tell you how many performances I didn't care for (soulless or otherwise) have been nominated or won Grammys in the past.

That is the risk in recording too unique of an interpretation of a piece like the Tchaikovsky. I'm sure most of Hilary Hahn's audience have heard numerous Tchaikovsky recordings before (I have probably a dozen different recordings of the piece of my ipod). Certainly, it can be tough straying from the norm, despite whatever good intentions she had about the recording.
